The most common cause for this is that VR4MAX Translator was installed without Administrator rights on your machine. The installer needs to be able to access the registry, the installation directories, and the plugin.ini file of all the 3ds max / Autodesk VIZ installation on your machine. Please log in on your machine as Administrator and install the software again.
If you installed 3ds max / Autodesk VIZ after you installed VR4MAX Translator then you need to update the plugin.ini file of the new installation. This can be done automatically using the "Configure MAX and VIZ to work with VR4MAX Translator" utility you can find in the Start / Programs / VR4MAX Translator folder. Select "Add Search Path" to add the path to the plug-ins to the plugin.ini files of all 3ds max / Autodesk VIZ installations the utility can find on your machine. Select "Remove Search Path" button removes the search path from the plugin.ini files.
If you setup VR4MAX Translator manually:
Q. I tried to setup VR4MAX Translator manually, but 3ds max / Autodesk VIZ can't find VR4MAX plug-ins or issues an error "Executable vr4max_trans.exe not found"
A. We strongly recommend letting the VR4MAX Translator installer take care of setting up the VR4MAX Translator plug-ins and updating 3ds max / Autodesk VIZ so they will find the plug-ins. Please remove all files you copied to your 3ds max / Autodesk VIZ installation and restart the installer again.
If you installed 3ds max / Autodesk VIZ after you installed VR4MAX Translator then you need to update the plugin.ini file of the new installation. Below some notes on the VR4MAX Translator installation in case you run into problems installing the software, or if you decided to setup the software manually. Again: Letting the installer do the work is the preferred way to install the software.
VR4MAX Translator exists of a number of programs: The file MAX2VMX.DLE and VR4MAX_UTILS.DLU implement the 3ds max plug-ins and need to be in the 3ds max plug-ins path, and the VR4MAX_TRANS.EXE executable that needs to be in the same directory as the plug-ins, or in one of the following directories relative to the directory of the 3ds max plug-ins: .bin, ..bin, ....bin, etc.
The error message "Executable vr4max_trans.exe not found" indicates that the MAX2VMX.DLE plug-in is not able to find the VR4MAX_TRANS.EXE executable in one of the bin directories described above. The most common cause for this is that the user manually copied the 3ds max plug-ins from the installation directory to the plug-ins directory of 3ds max installation.
Normally VR4MAX Translator installer takes care of preparing 3ds max so that it can find the 3ds max plug-ins in directory where you installed the software by adding a 3ds max plug-in search path to the plugin.ini file of all the 3ds max or Autodesk VIZ installations it can find. This can be checked manually by inspecting the plugins.ini file on the file system, of by checking the Plug Ins tab in the Configure Paths dialog available in the Customize menu. If the path to the VR4MAX Translator plug-ins is not found please add it manually using the Configure Paths dialog, or re-install the VR4MAX Translator after making sure the plugins.ini file can be modified. Don't forget to log in as administrator to install VR4MAX Translator.
If the standard installation procedure is not successful you might consider copying the 3ds max plug-ins to the plug-ins directory of your 3ds max installation. Don't forget to copy VR4MAX_TRANS.EXE to the same directory or a subdirectory named bin.
